
60 Moor Street in 2025
60 Moor Street was built in 1874, it was attached to the house of the Peet Family at number 58, they had a large joinery yard which was taken over when Knowsley Road was constructed. Walter Lloyd Wiggins, from the large Wiggins family of the Queens Hotel, Aughton Street, lived there with his young family in the early 1900s. He had been working as a Decorator for a large Liverpool company but he came out of the army after WW1 and work was scarce. After trying to earn a living in post war Liverpool Walter set out to find work in California and set himself up as a Decorative Artist working from the Atlas Hotel, 125, West Second Street, Los Angeles. He died in the Free Hospital, Los Angeles, California in 1938. Number 60 was taken over by an Insurance Broker John Rothwell after Walter and family left.
The Man from the Pru
The "Man From the Pru" in 1920s Ormskirk was John Rothwell of 60 Moor Street, long time agent for Prudential Insurance. The Prudential, founded in London in 1848, had thousands of agents selling insurance throughout the country and John Rothwell was the representative for Ormskirk until his early death aged 51 in 1926.

Rothwell-Shaw wedding, 1928
In June 1928, Miss Eva Rothwell, daughter of the late Mr. John Rothwell, married Leonard Shaw of Wigan Road at Ormskirk Emmanuel Wesleyan Church. Both were Sunday School teachers and members of the choir at Emmanuel Church.
Rothwell-Hurst wedding, 1929
John Stanley Rothwell of 60 Moor Street, 3rd son of the late John Rothwell married Miss Helen Hurst in July 1929.
Rothwell - Iddon wedding, 1938
Cyril Wesley Rothwell, youngest son of Mrs. and the late Mr. John Rothwell, married Freda Alice, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Iddon of Chorley (late of Aughton Street).
Death of Mrs. Rothwell
Mrs. Elizabeth E. Rothwell, wife of the late John Rothwell of 60 Moor Street, died September 30th 1950.
60 Moor Street - available for auction, November 1950

Stone's Opticians
Number 60 Moor Street became the Leslie Stone Optician's new premises after he moved from 11 Railway Road in the early 1950s. Leslie Stone born Liverpool 5th September 1906, was an Ophthalmic Optician as was his father Maurice and his older brother Ernest.
Maurice Stone was born in Buelestock in the Province of Grodna, Russia in 1868 and became a Nationalised British Citizen when he pledged allegiance to King George V in 1916, along with his Russian born wife Grace.
Their second son Herbert died of wounds in Pas-De-Calais on the 27th September 1918 aged 18, he served with the Manchester Regiment.

Before he was able to practice as an Optician, Maurice was a Jeweller in Harrogate, he moved to Liverpool in the early 1900s before Maurice and Grace moved to Prescot Road, son Leslie lived in Burscough with his school teacher wife Grace. Maurice died in 1953 and Ernest and Leslie and family continued with the business in Moor Street for many years.

Eye Care Centre, 2023
The Stone family continued in business at 60 Moor Street under David Stone until very recently when the "Family Eye Care" closed its doors. The premises had been in use as an opticians for almost 70 years after Leslie Stone moved there in the early 1950s from 11 Railway Road. The appearance of the building changed in 1987 when the ground floor window on the front elevation was enlarged after receiving listed building consent.
The Retro Room
In Spring 2024 the building began to turn pink and The Retro Room opened shortly afterwards, a companion to a store in Lark Lane, Liverpool specialising in retro and vintage clothing.
