Malika's story

Mallika C. (age: 68)

What does gardening mean to you?
Gardening is a way to relax and relieve stress. I find it interesting and it gives my house some beautiful colour. It is also a form of entertainment for me.

Why did you join the Lampton park Community Garden?
I am here on holiday and my granddaughter thought it would be nice for me to join the sessions and do some gardening in the UK.

How long have you been gardening and what do you grow?
I have been gardening in India for 20 years. I grow coconut, plantain, curry leaves, drumstick/moringa, flowers and henna leaves.

What do you do with your harvest?
Most of the plants I grow are used for cooking. For example, I use coconut to make coconut chutney and use drumstick and curry leaves to put in sambar. The flowers are for decoration and I bring some when I go to the temple. It is tradition to use plantain leaves as plates for cultural events. Lastly, I use the henna leaves to make henna and use it in traditional ceremonies like weddings and festivals.

Do you have any tips for someone who would like to start gardening?
Make sure to turn the soil before planting. Otherwise plants can find it hard to collect water and nutrients from the soil.
Some plants need to be planted in small pots before you can put them into the ground. This encourages root growth and better water absorption when the roots are small. Make sure to do some research on how its best to grow your specific plant!
