Registered Charity Number 1176534
We are a registered charity which is run by volunteers and local residents, who wish to bring communities together by facilitating and organising activities and events for the local residents and wider community. We will work with residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.
Update 2020-21 - During the pandemic and lockdowns we will not be able to organise or run any events but will resume as soon as it is safe to do so.
History of LAERA
LAERA (Lincoln Avenue Estate Residents Association) was originally set up as a garden party around 1978, by the late Betty Hopkins for the queen's jubilee. It didn't have a proper "home" for a few years and the committee used to meet at the Winning Post. Eventually a hall became available and LAERA took on the lease for the Crane Community Centre from the local authority.
With Mrs Hopkins as Chair, LAERA managed the day to day running of the CCC, activities for the elderly, day trips abroad, mum and toddler group etc. It was available to hire by residents for birthday parties and local businesses to provide activities e.g. yoga, drama, Irish dancing etc. Some of these activities still run out of the hall.
When Mrs Hopkins retired, the remaining committee felt unable to continue the huge task of managing the Community Centre and arranging activities and so the Trustees handed over the reigns to a new LAERA committee, who are now undertaking the huge task of building up services and events for the local community again.
Although "new" LAERA is not going to act like a traditional residents association, as was originally intended when it was set up 40 years ago, the name is known by many of the longstanding residents and was thus kept for continuity. New LAERA will be working towards facilitating and providing services for the local community, to hopefully a larger degree than before.
