Money, Metaphysics and Morality

Tuesday 02 October 2012
18:00 to 19:30

Roger Jennings leads a discussion which will be part of Think in Kingston 2012 - on Money.

Whatever we feel about money, there is no question that it has played a vital role in the transformation of human society from bare subsistence to the production and distribution of a vast range of goods and services, private and public. It retains, nevertheless, an elusive if not mystical quality. In attempting to pin down the concept of money, Roger will explore, in this discussion and an associated paper (see http://e-voice.org.uk/kingstonphilosophycafe/files/view/philosophy-cafe-briefings/Money,_Metaphysics_and_Morality.pdf), a wide range of philosophical issues, including: money as a feature of of the "social and institutional world" in which we live; whether this world has to be the way it is; how, if at all, inequalities in the distribution of income and wealth can be justified; whether we are even sure what we mean by "wealth"; whether an obsession with the GNP is the hallmark of a society that "knows the price of everything and the value of nothing (Oscar Wilde)... We may not answer all these questions but we can exercise our minds by trying.
