Richard Baron on "Happiness: the end of a dream"

Wednesday 19 October 2011
19:00 to 21:00

Other people care about our happiness. Our friends and family want us to
be happy. Governments are now interested in gross national happiness.
But we know that if we set up happiness as a goal for ourselves, we will
very likely fail. We can only achieve it indirectly, by aiming at
something else. We need to resolve this conundrum. How can we all want
something for one another, when wanting it for ourselves does not work?
In this talk, Richard Baron will argue that we should stop wanting
happiness for anyone. Then we can move on to a much richer concept of
human flourishing.

This is our slightly sceptical contribution(in the tradition of Kingston Philosophy Cafe)  to Think in Kingston 2011, Kingston's festival of ideas, this year on the theme of happiness / well-being / flourishing...
