July 2: Environmentalist and writer Shaun Chamberlin on contemporary environmental challenges
Thursday 02 July 2009
18:00 to 19:15
Unusually for Philosophy Café, we are going to consider facts and evidence with the help of an expert, before moving on to the ethical issues underlying them next month. Come along with your questions about climate change, CO2 emissions, nuclear power, peak oil, renewable energy…
Our speaker Shaun Chamberlin read Philosophy at the University of York before going on to work as a teacher and the manager of the learning centre for marginalised groups at Kingston's Kaleidoscope Project. Since 2005, however, he has devoted himself full-time to exploring the environmental challenges facing our global community, and how we can enable a resilient, sustainable and joyful shared future. He is a specialist on climate change and energy resource depletion, and is the author of The Transition Timeline. He has been involved with the Transition Towns movement since its inception and is a member of the Steering Group of Transition Town Kingston. He is also the Development Director for Tradable Energy Quotas, and sits on the Department of Energy and Climate Change's Personal Carbon Allowances Advisory Group.
His website at www.darkoptimism.org discusses all of his work.
Do carry on talking in the pub afterwards, and join us next month for the follow-up discussion on environmental ethics.
