A letter from Rev Dawn Jewson and the PCC of St Mary’s Sheering

One of the features of our church that is often commented upon is our lovely churchyard.   It is an oasis of peace and beauty for local people and visitors alike. And turning our thoughts to its primary purpose, we know that many who live in our parish hope that when the time comes they will be able to be buried there.

However, you may be aware that St Mary’s churchyard now has limited space for new burials.   Our PCC (Parochial Church Council) has been considering this issue for some time and has identified three options:

  1. Re-use some of the older graves
  2. Apply to close the churchyard (the final decision would rest with the Minister of Justice)
  3. Extend the churchyard

If at all possible we want to continue to offer parishioners the opportunity of burial in the churchyard while leaving existing graves undisturbed.   Our preferred option is therefore to extend the existing churchyard onto agricultural land towards the east.

The (very many) steps to achieve this include:

  • Acquiring the land (initial enquiries have proved positive)
  • Fencing the land
  • Obtaining planning permission for change of use
  • Making a decision about the route of the public footpath
  • Raising the necessary funds to enable these steps to be carried out, currently estimated at between £8,000 and £10,000

We anticipate that Sheering residents will want to know more about how this might be achieved, so we are holding an information morning to which all are welcome, on Saturday 31 August 2019 between 10.00 am and 12 noon in St Mary’s Church Room, Church Lane, Sheering CM22 7NR. Outline plans will be available to view and church members will be on hand to chat things through over a cup of tea or coffee.  We very much hope that you will drop in and take this opportunity to find out more about our proposals and how we might be able to work together to achieve the best outcome for our community.
