Cutting down of the Rose Bay Willow-herb

Club News. The Friends of Rectory Park met last Saturday the 28th September for their monthly working party in the park assisted by the The-Challenge group from North Birmingham. The-Challenge turned out to be a party of 50 youngsters between the ages of 16 and 17 year old boys and girls who turned up to help with three tasks. The digging out of the old pond, which had become full of dumped rubbish, the construction of two hibernacula's for amphibians and the removal of the dead Rose Bay Willow Herb commonly known as the fireweed. I like many others had never heard of The-Challange, but their motto appears to be "Are you up for it". The-Challenge offers the opportunity for young boys and girls to gain the additional skills that you can’t master at school – the real world skills that employers and universities look for. The programmes count towards certain parts of the Duke of Edinburgh award and it is an easy and cost effective way to complete certain parts of DofE. The-Challenge is a chance to get ahead, learning new skills, making new friends and working with others as a team and gaining experiences that will last a life time. Peter Bell FoRP Press Officer
