Planting Whips in Park

Childeren and freinds planting whips

On a fine hot sunny day some 19 children from Hollyfield Primary School, aided by the Warden Beth Ashley, teachers and the Friends of Rectory Park planted around 1,000 hawthorn whips along side a 150 meters of an old hedge in Rectory Park. This hedge had recently been professionally laid by Ron Smart. Beth demonstrated how the children should plant the whips and to be careful about the thorns on the plants before the children set about the task, with gusto and enthusiasm. The whips were supply by the Trees for Life, organised by the Friends of Rectory Park with the support of Birmingham Parks Department. The planting took around one & half hours and was followed by a well earned drink of orange squash and a chocolate Easter egg Peter Bell Press Officer FoRP
