Open Forum - Wednesday 30th November

Venue: Bromley Y, 17 Ethlebert Road, Bromley

Time: 5.30pm to 7.30pm (please join us for mulled wine and mince pies from 5.30pm)

Agenda: We will be joined by Rachel Dunley, Head of Service Early Intervention and Family Support who will update us on the work of Bromley Children Project, Siobhan Cunningham who is the Youth Engagement Officer for Affinity Sutton and Elaine Harrison from Bromley LA who will inform us about the Crystal Palace Park Community Projects Fund.  We are also hoping that George Ruston is available to deliver a fundraising session.

This will be my (Judy) last open forum meeting so I hope that many of you are able to join us so that I have a chance to say goodbye.

Santa Toy Run - Saturday 10th December 2016

This will be your opportunity to receive free toys and games for your children and young people

We have again been invited to receive the toys and games from the Widow's Bikers Sons to distribute through our membership to children and young people across the Borough.  Last year we were overwhelmed by the amount of gifts received and these were shared amongst member organisations.  This year the Widow's Bikers will again be placing collection bins in Masonic Halls across the South East and they hope that the amount donated will be better than last year. They will ride in on their bikes to deliver the presents on Saturday 10th December.  I had hoped to negotiate an earlier date but unfortunately this is not possible.  This was a fun event and I am hoping that we can get more organisations involved to receive the gifts.

Setting up for Success guide -3 free copies up for grabs.

The Forum has 3 free copies of the book 'Setting up For Success' a practical guide for community organisations.  It is primarily an ideas manual - it provides introductions to each topic, practical tips and case studies, and links to other resources to help small organisations grow from strength to strengh.  Bromley Community Voices: Hidden Homelessness Seminar

25th November at Bromley United Reform Church, BR1 1RY
14:00 – 16:30
  • A new project at Community Links Bromley, is organising a seminar to talk about the problems of the Hidden Homeless in Bromley.  We are aiming through the event to:
  • Encourage voluntary and community organisations in Bromley to share their experience and knowledge
  • Examine the impact of National and Local Strategies, 
  • Discuss how to face current and future challenges
We welcome attendance from both interested individuals as well as representatives from organisations and the event is free and open to all – but you will need to reserve a place – to do this contact
Action on Hearing Loss will be providing a signer for the event.
The seminar is chaired by Janet Tibbalds (chair of Community Links Bromley) and the panel consists of:

  • Mark Ellison, Deputy Head of Age UK Bromley & Greenwich)
  • Sabrina Pathan, Homelesslink

Registration starts at 14.00, and the seminar commences at 14.30, there will also be an opportunity for networking at the end of seminar.

A resource to support the voluntary and community sector to engage with schools

Many changes have taken place to the schools system in England in recent years. This has led to alterations in the nature of these relationships, particularly with regard to the commissioning of support services. Arts Awards Arts Award, managed by the Arts Council and Trinity college, inspires young people aged 5 – 25 to grow their arts talents and achieve a national accreditation. It is run at five levels in arts centres,  schools, colleges, community groups and many other settings. Domestic Violence Level 1 Foundation    1st December 2016    9:30 – 12:30

Target Group - All frontline staff and managers including administration staff and receptionists who often have first contact with service users.  Staff who regularly work with families where there is domestic abuse and who already have a basic awareness of domestic abuse. This may include staff working in the area of health, housing, legal advice, police, social care, benefits, early years/childcare, voluntary sector, education, vulnerable adults, substance misuse and probation.

Course Aims –

  • To raise awareness of domestic abuse to a multi-agency audience.
  • To enable professionals to understand their role, in effectively working with families where there is a domestic abuse including responding to perpetrators


Domestic Violence Level 2 Intermediate    23rd January 2017  9:30 - 4:30

Target Group - Staff who regularly work with victims and their families, such as housing, education, voluntary agencies, staff working with at risk  adults, probation, CPS, substance misuse teams, children’s services

Course Aims –

To improve participants’ skills and build on their knowledge of the issues surrounding domestic abuse enabling them to support victims and their families effectively in a multi-agency environment.


Domestic Violence Level 3 Advanced    15th March 2017  9:30 - 4:30

Target Group - Practitioners who are key agencies in the core support group for domestic abuse victims and their families, such as social workers, family liaison workers, designated staff for child protection, teachers, housing caseworkers, domestic violence specialists and CAFCASS.

Course Aims –

To promote a common, shared understanding of the roles and responsibilities of different professionals working closely with victims of domestic abuse and their children. To achieve effective working relationships and consistency in assessments and responses to families.

Robert Burns Humanitarian Awards Do you know of someone who works tirelessly, perhaps through personal sacrifice, to make life better for others?  Why not nominate them for the above award?  It  doesn't have to be someone you know personally it could be someone you have heard about or someone you've read about in the media. Deadline: 14 November 2016.
Autism Uncut Film & Media Awards 2017 Inviting filmmakers of all abilities to create a short film, aiming to increase public awareness and depict a clearer picture on the difficulties experienced by people with autism. Shortlisted films will be screened at an awards ceremony hosted by BAFTA.  Deadline: 1 December 2016.
EPIC Awards  Voluntary and amateur arts sector groups can apply for an above award to raise their profile.  Categories are: Engagement; Partnership; Innovation; Creativity. Deadline: 12 January 2017.
Charity Governance Awards
Does your charity have a brilliantly effective board?  There are seven categories in the above awards which reward and recognise outstanding governance. A new category this year is 'Embracing Digital'. Deadline: 13 January 2017.



Co-op Local Community Fund The Co-op Local Community Fund is our way of giving back to our members and their communities. Co-op members get 1% of everything they spend on Co-op products to give to a local cause that matters to them. Comic Relief - HIV, Diversity and Dignity The maximum grant available is £250,000 and a grant length of three to five years. The funding could be used to start new activities according to identified needs of Key Populations, or to strengthen existing work. Woodward Charitable Trust The Trust offers small grants up to £5,000 and a few large grants over £5,000 usually to charities already know to the trustees.  Eligible activities: Isolated children and young people; Prisoners and ex offenders; Disadvantaged women; Disability projects; Arts outreach work; Integration and community cohesion. Deadline: 16 December 2016
Baring Foundation Strengthening the Voluntary Sector.  Two funds: Grants up to £30,000 for training, education and capacity building; and up to £150,000 for applied projects. Deadline: 23 January 2017, 5pm
Reach Fund Charities and social enterprises can apply for a grant between £5,000 and £15,000 to implement an investment readiness plan to grow their organisation. Apply at any time.
