Summer Holidays with the YCP!

The summer hols are just around the corner and some schools have already broken up so we thought we'd better clue everyone in about what's coming up with the YCP!

We've been working seriously hard in the office to make sure we've got a jam-packed activity programme for our young carers. Staff have been busy writing funding applications to get the money we need to run activities and then planning each activity down to the smallest detail to make sure nothing goes wrong and there are no last minute glitches!

So here's a snapshot of what we've got planned:

Following its success last year, we've planned another day out on the river for a group of 12+ young carers. We're off into London to meet up with the crew of the Volharding which is a fully restored 120 year old Dutch sailing barge. We'll spend the day learning some new skills and enjoying the unique sights on deck as we sail along the Thames!  Check out the Volharding Project here: https://volhardingproject.wordpress.com/

We're also running our super popular and successful 4 day drama workshop again this year. Last year the young carers came up with an epic play which they wrote and performed themselves, with the help of our friend and professional actor Paul! Last year's performance involved zombies, spies and aliens.. we're interested to see what this year's workshop will deliver! Huge thanks to the CornerHOUSE Theatre in Tolworth for letting us use their theatre.

Over the last few years we've built a fantastic partnership with the Horse Rangers Association in Hampton Court. This summer, they've offered us two opportunities to spend the day as Horse Rangers; riding and looking after the beautiful horses at their stables. We always have such a fantastic time and the memories the young carers make on these two days are bound to last a lifetime.

We're off to Walton Firs again this year for two overnight camping trips. We will be getting involved in all sorts of activities, including archery, caving and climbing. We're going to have a go at making our own fire to toast our marshmallows and we'll have a tasty chippie tea! Overnight trips are always the best way to get to know the young carers and provide them with a break from their caring responsibilities and a chance to have loads of fun (but usually not much sleep)!

Camping

Another big hit every year is our trip to Littlehampton. Lots of the families we take along wouldn't be able to make that kind of trip without our support so it really means a lot. We usually spend most of the day in the sea (brrrr!) and everyone is exhausted on the way home but it is most definitely worth it. We'd like to take this opportunity to say a humungous thank you to Carers' Trust who provided the funding for this trip!

Seaside

We're feeling brave enough to take a coachload of under 12s to Marwell Zoo...! This will be my last trip as a Young Carers' Support Worker so we'll have to make it a good one! Can't wait to see what they've got to offer there... I'm hoping for a selfie with a giraffe.. who's with me?

We can't wait to see all those who are coming to these activities (and all the others we've got planned) and hope you'll enjoy every second of your summer holidays!

Over and out!
