Getting Work
Qualifications
The qualifications which you achieved outside of the UK might not be recognised in this country. To
have these qualifications compared to British ones you can contact the National Academic Recognition
Information Centre. You will be required to send evidence of your qualifications
with an English Translation. Although general advice is free, if you want an individual assessment and a
letter of comparison for your qualifications there is a charge.
Finding Work
There are many ways you can find a job in your area:
• Jobseeker Direct: The Jobseeker Direct Helpline is a telephone service for anybody looking for
work. The number is 0845 6060234 and is open weekdays 8am to 6pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm.
All calls are charged at local rate.
• Online: Internet websites including the Directgov website and Directgov's job searching page
can be accessed for job listings and information about jobs, training and assistance.
• Recruitment agencies: There are many recruitment agencies that offer many services to the
public. A recruitment agency can help you by submitting
you for vacancies that arise, as well as helping you learn
skills that will help you find and keep work.
• Advertisements in newspapers: In many newspapers
in the UK, advertisements are placed into newspapers,
including job vacancies. North Lincolnshire's local paper,
the Scunthorpe Telegraph, contains job vacancies that
are local to the area.
• Advertisements in shop windows: Many smaller
businesses will post advertisements in shopwindows;
this is common in newsagents and smaller shops.
