Summary/Overview:
The URP Toolbox is an Australian site providing “a free resource of principles and strategies to enhance meaningful stakeholder involvement in decision-making.” The site was developed as part of an academic project and is now hosted by the University of Griffith. As the name suggests the focus of the site is primarily on participation in coastal management, but it is useful for other sectors as well as it provides information of a wide range of involvement methods. The site features a database of over 60 community involvement methods; all of which are presented in a short summary with links to further information and -in some cases - case studies. The greatest strength of the site is the search function, which allows searches for tools according degree of participation, cost, time required and many other factors. This means that even though the total number of methods on the site can seem overwhelming it is easy to identify those that are relevant to each situation.
The methods covered range from traditional methods of consultation to more deliberative methods. The material on each method is very brief and broad-brushed. Those looking for practical facilitation tips will need to look elsewhere. However as an easy to use overview of what’s available the site is very good.
