Summary/Overview:

The Institute for Citizenship is a charity which aims to “promote informed, active citizenship and greater participation in democracy and society through a combination of community projects, research, education and discussion and debate.”

The Institute works on a number of projects which focus particularly on youth engagement in the context of the Citizenship curriculum, including their Question Time for Schools programme which is run with the support of the BBC. Project information on this and other initiatives including the ‘Democracy through Citizenship’ scheme is accessible online.

The website gives access to resources for citizenship teachers which are provided for download in PDF form, some are free, and some are charged for. There is a particular section devoted to European Citizenship which includes a ‘Speak out!’ guide which is available for download in a number of languages.

Specialised teaching resources such as those for Young Offenders and Special Educational Needs groups are provided and the site maintains a good, well-ordered list of links, although parts of the site out of date such as the ‘get the vote out’ section from 2004.
