Take Part Cowley Hill - Community Event - 31st March 2010

A bright and sunny Wednesday afternoon at St Michaels Church, Borehamwood...a parked fire engine with children taking tours inside, visitors from Parliament, local councillors being quizzed, childrens face painting...this was the making of Cowley Hills end of year Take Part community event!  A catalogue of organisations and speakers got together to showcase what taking part in Cowley Hill is all about.  To name a few Herts County Council, Parliamentry Outreach, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Herts Fire and Rescue Service and three local councillors were all present at St Michaels Church to answer questions from members of the community and provide information about how they can get more involved with decision making and play a more active role within their community.  The event was a real success and saw over a hundred members of the community visit during the course of the afternoon.

Yes You Can Course

The 'Yes You Can' course is run by Hannah Gottlieb and Sue Jaques as part of the Take Part programme.  The course addresses issues such as low self esteem and confidence, lack of self belief and general negativity in peoples lives.  The course helps participants feel more positive, become assertive and confident.  This assists them in taking charge of their lives and begin to look outside themselves and into the wider community.

Sue Jaques (course trainer) describes the course as helping participants focus on the more positive things in their lives and realise that they can make a difference - "Hannah and I find that our participants are hugely changed by the experience on the course and have gone on to achieve employement, identify training and education in which they would like to take part and also explore the area of voluntary work."

Confidence - Outward Bound

Confidence has been found to be a common barrier to participants getting more involved in local decision-making.  Cowley Hill participants have engaged in a number ‘outward bound’ courses, which have not only helped build their confidence but also brought some young women in Cowley Hill together for the first time.  The on going ‘outward bound’ courses have been vital in securing ongoing interest and involvement in Take Part Hertfordshire. The first outward bound course saw four residents from the hostel taking part. Following the highly successful day a further 12 residents took part in the second course, the numbers boosted as a result of the positive messages from the first four. A further group of individuals (pictured) from the local Day Service Centre have undertaken similar training, developing their confidence and self-esteem in the process. For many it was a completely unique experience and helped spark their interest in the programme, understanding that they can help shape what the programme offers them.
