Pub of the Season
Our Spring Pub of the Season is the Dog & Gun at East Butterwick, home of the local DarkTribe microbrewery, which is located at the back of the pub. Run by licensee Dave "Dixie" Dean and wife Judy, they have been at the helm for the last two years. Dixie brews a wide range of real ales, including two dark milds, and as May is deemed to be CAMRA's mild month, we decided it would be fitting to present the certificate on National Mild Day, Saturday 5th May.
Dixie put on his own Honey Mild and a guest mild from Oldershaw Brewery of Grantham for the occasion, and these beers were enjoyed by Scunthorpe CAMRA branch members, pub regulars and a steady stream of visitors eager to sample the milds on offer. With complimentary sandwiches provided by Judy, and a tour of the brewery in the afternoon, this was a very enjoyable occasion. Even the sun decided to shine later in the day, and we took the opportunity to experience some al fresco drinking on the riverbank, watching the River Trent (and the odd boat), wend lazily by.
The Dog & Gun is an excellent, no-frills pub, and with its own beers brewed on site, something of a rarity in our area. The beers are excellent, with two DarkTribe ales normally available at the very reasonable price of £1.80 a pint. Why not try it for yourself?
