| The Talking Newspapers provide a service of local news, information and articles from the Echo and other publications, read by teams of volunteers on to cassette tapes and compact discs. |
These are sent, entirely free of charge, to anyone in these districts who is blind, partially sighted, or simply has difficulty in reading. There is no need to be registered sight impaired.
The tapes or CDs arrive by post in padded wallets every fortnight, with FREEPOST return labels. We can even provide tape or CD players on loan to those who do not have their own.
If you, or someone you know, would like to find out what’s going on locally, and can’t manage to read the paper – or if you wish to know more about what we do – please get in touch.
In 2012 we’re going digital!
We need to move ahead – and cassettes and CDs will no longer be used. We’ll be recording onto USB memory sticks to be played on easy to use, portable machines. It will all still be FREE to our listeners but, of course, we will have to buy new players, sticks, duplicators etc.
Our Fundraising Officer, Jean Harrison, has been busy since April 2011 and hasn’t missed a trick! Sterling efforts have been made all round and we are sure that by the end of 2011, we will have the funding in place.
Our listeners will be kept informed every step of the way and we’re really looking forward to 2012.
