Volunteering

Switchboard can only continue to exist through the hard work and ongoing commitment of our volunteers, and we are always looking for new volunteers to join us. If you decide to volunteer with us, you will become part of a friendly and supportive team which provides essential support for our callers.

We’re currently recruiting:

Switchboard Operators (to take calls)

Associates (fundraising, office management skills, publicity, information – gathering and sharing, IT/Training skills)

You don't need specific qualifications or experience, and we welcome volunteers of any age or background, however, we ask that you:

  • Identify as and have experience of living as a lesbian, gay or bisexual, and have an accepting and positive attitude towards your sexuality
  • Have experience of relationship(s) with people of the same sex.
  • Have some experience of coming out to significant people in your life – e.g. family, friends or colleagues.
  • Have a commitment to and understanding of the importance and meaning of confidentiality.
  • Have the ability to actively listen and communicate clearly over the telephone
  • Have compassion and respect for people as unique individuals
  • Have a non-judgmental and welcoming attitude to others
  • Be able to read written information and to make short notes which will be read by other operators
  • Be committed and motivated to undertake 4 full day training events (all held on Sundays) and to be available for line duty for a minimum of 2 nights a month

Training

You will receive four full days training, which will include listening skills, how to handle calls, seeking out information, awareness of local resources and an introduction to sexual health. The training will include visiting speakers, small group discussion and role play. You will also be assigned a mentor to support you through the training process and on an ongoing basis.
