What we do
The main focus of our service is the telephone helpline which operates between 7pm and 10pm every night of the year. We act as a source of information, support and referral for any issue relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transsexual life.
We receive calls on a wide range of issues, for example our caller may be:
New to the area and so looking for information about the local scene, including pubs, clubs and social groups
Individuals of any age, coming to terms with being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual
Seeking safe sex advice
Unsure about their sexuality
Coming to terms with the loss of a partner
Experiencing domestic violence
Upset about the breakdown of a relationship
Coming to terms with a HIV diagnosis
Concerned about their son or daughter who has recently disclosed their sexuality
Seeking information about local sexual health clinics
These are examples of just some of the types of call we receive each week, and we aim to treat all callers with empathy, respect and compassion, whatever their concern.
We appreciate that some people may find it difficult to call, but we can assure callers that the person answering the telephone will be a caring and well trained volunteer, and we believe it can often help to talk. All our volunteers have experience of what it is like to be a lesbian, gay man, bisexual or transsexual, and have been trained to offer a friendly and non-judgemental service.
All calls are confidential and we will not be able to trace your number. Calls are charged at ‘local rate’ from BT Landlines. So if you need a listening ear or some up-to-date information, please feel free to give us a call between 7 and 10pm on any night of the year.
