Places of Worship in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
INTRODUCTION
Shalom, asalaam aleikum, namaste, Sat Siri Akaal, and welcome to a second edition of ‘Places of Worship’ (reprinted, due to popular demand, with grant aid from the Faiths in Action fund).
The Kingston Inter Faith Forum was established in 2003 and comprises representatives of religious faith groups/ communities in Kingston who wish to participate together with other appropriate local organisations. We serve as a channel of communication and understanding between the various faith groups, providing an opportunity for discussion of issues of mutual interest and/or concern. More information about the Forum can be found at our website: www.kingstoninterfaith.org.uk The Forum aims to:
i) develop communication channels between different faith structures to improve the understanding between key community leaders to, for example, promote peace;
ii) provide an opportunity for dialogue between key community leaders in mutually respectful ways to reflect on difficult issues without necessarily binding any institution to another;
iii) develop friendship and peace amongst religious leaders;
iv) develop a vision for Kingston such as to make Kingston a better place by inter-faith understanding, encouraging peace and community respect;
v) develop a programme of activities, e.g. presentations by community leaders on shared values;
vi) sharing of cultural activities such as music, song, cuisine and literature;
vii) development of a newsletter and web page; and utilising existing exhibitions to provide a focus for events;
viii) develop a community understanding of religious differences in an effort to reduce prejudice and intolerance in society.
ix) to be part of the Borough’s approach to community cohesion.
We hope this leaflet provides interesting information for visitors to Kingston and for local residents about the places of worship or faith communities to be found in the borough.
It mainly includes contact details for those faith communities which are members of the Kingston Inter Faith Forum: Baha’is, Buddhism, Christianity (Anglicans, Christian Scientists, the Free Churches, Greek Orthodox, Quakers, and Roman Catholics), Hinduism, Islam (Ahmadiyya and Sunni), Judaism (Liberal and Orthodox), Paganism and Sikhism.
We would like to thank the following for assistance in producing this leaflet:
- the faith communities of the borough
- the Government department of Communities and Local Government for ‘Faiths in Action’ funding for the production of this leaflet
- Kingston University Chaplaincy (www.kingston.ac.uk/chaplaincy) and the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames who were our partners in this project
Schools might like to note that the Kingston Standing Advisory Council for RE on its website (www.kingston.gov.uk/sacre) provides information specifically for school visits to faith community centres
