Brendan Taaffe, founder of 'Turtle Dove' (http://www.turtledoveharmony.org/programs.html), is a composer and arranger who has toured with Northern Harmony, and led vocal workshops in Ireland, Bulgaria, England, Scotland, Germany, Holland, Zimbabwe, and the U.S.  Brendan is known for his dynamic conducting, and his gift for bringing out everyone's talents.

Brendan spent three weeks in Zimbabwe in the spring of 2011, working with singers in Mhondoro, Chikore, Seke and Chitungwiza to record and document their traditional harmony repertoire. The songs range from church choruses, to songs for a rain-making ceremony, to folk songs about a bachelor's hapless attempts to impress the girls. Some have mbira accompaniment, some are acapella: all are a joy to sing. The Traditional American harmony songs Brendan teaches — from the tight swing of gospel quartets to the “high lonesome” sound of bluegrass—have beautiful poetry, striking harmonies, great rhythm and are a lot of fun to sing.

All parts will be taught by ear and no experience is necessary—singing is a birthright for all of us, so come and sing, even if (especially if) your primary school music teacher told you not to.

Testimonials:

“Your personal qualities of being open, uncompetitive, caring and genuine created the environment that allowed many of the other wonderful moments to happen.  That is very unusual--to be a leader who, by example, encourages everyone to connect, not compete, through the music.”

“What a gift --- this music of the world that brings us all together from our different cultures and practices, giving us all the same joyful, creative purpose.  Isn't it lovely to know we can come from far and afield and know each other somehow?  How we are all part of this great human family humbly struggling to know ourselves and live in joy and love in the world.  These camps are about so much more than singing...”

Singing for babies and parents

16/01/2011

Regrettably, Euphonix rehearsals are unsuitable for children or babies (we've tried it occasionally and the parent as well as the other singers find them too distracting). There are organisations that cater particularly for very young children and their parents, and both these below run sessions in the area:

- Monkey Music http://www.monkeymusic.co.uk/ "introduces music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy."

-  Jo Jingles http://www.jojingles.com/testimonials.asp  "MUSIC, SINGING & MOVEMENT classes for babies and pre-school age children from 3 months to 5 years of age."
