Thanks to funding from the Primary Care Trust the Cambridge Road Estates Community Group were able to provide two weeks of free summer activity sessions for 8 – 11 year olds. These sessions were lead by Community Halls Manager Jason Rogers and run by Damian Wood, gym instructor at Surbiton YMCA . They were aimed at encouraging the youngsters to learn about health and fitness in a fun way. Jason reported that children enjoyed activities including dodge ball, indoor cricket and botcha. The Community Group have further funding available for similar events during school holidays and are very keen to learn from both the parents and children involved what kind of activities they would like to see provided. Wednesday July 30th saw the start of our new format coach trips. The Community Group committee decided that , rather than hire just one or two large coaches each year, in future we would make use of the mini buses available from RaKaT. In this way we hope that we will be able to afford to offer a greater number of excursions to residents each year. The first of these trips saw two mini buses driven by Des Gordon and Jason Rogers leave Piper Hall headed for Brighton. Fortunately the weather was kind to those who booked for the outing and the sun shone as both min-buses made their way to the coast. From there residents parted ways as they made their own plans for the day, some content to sit by the sea, others happy to explore the local shops and market. 6pm saw young and old alike board the mini buses for the return trip. At just £3.50 for adults and £2.00 for under 16’s the consensus seems to be that the new format is a good thing, although we would welcome comments and suggestions for other such outings.
