Thanks to funding from the Primary Care Trust the Cambridge Road Estates Community Group were able to provide two weeks of free summer activity sessions for 8 – 11 year olds. These sessions were lead by Community Halls Manager Jason Rogers and run by Damian Wood, gym instructor at Surbiton YMCA They were aimed at encouraging the youngsters to learn about health and fitness in a fun way. Jason reported that children enjoyed activities including dodge ball, indoor cricket and botcha. The Community Group have further funding available for similar events during school holidays and are very keen to learn from both the parents and children involved what kind of activities they would like to see provided.  Please contact us on 020 8547 6910

Wednesday July 30th saw the start of our new format coach trips. The Community Group committee decided that , rather than hire just one or two large coaches each year, in future we would make use of the mini buses available from RaKaT. In this way we hope that we will be able to afford to offer a greater number of excursions to residents each year.  The first of these trips saw two mini buses driven by Des Gordon and Jason Rogers leave Piper Hall headed for Brighton. Fortunately the weather was kind to those who booked for the outing and the sun shone as both min-buses made their way to the coast. From there residents parted ways as they made their own plans for the day, some content to sit by the sea, others happy to explore the local shops and market. 6pm saw young and old alike board the mini buses for the return trip.  At just £3.50 for adults and £2.00 for under 16’s the consensus seems to be that the new format is a good thing, although we would welcome comments and suggestions for other such outings.

Should anyone have ever doubted the commitment of the Cambridge Road Estates Community Group towards the residents they represent or our ability to work as a team in the most difficult of circumstances they will have dismissed such notions after attending our 2008 Fun Day. Saturday September 6th saw the fifth annual Cambridge Road Estates ‘Fun Day’ which was a real partnership effort organised by the Cambridge Road Estates Community Group, the Royal Borough of Kingston Resident Participation Team, Mears Ltd and Smith & Byford. After months of careful planning it finally came together on Madingley Green. with the support of companies including National Clamps, Tesco’s New Malden, Blue Hawaii, Wilkinson, The Look Hair Studio, Capelli Hairdressers, Kingston Vineyard, The Bear Factory, Horton Park Children's Farm, Cannons Health Club Surbiton and Odeon Cinema and funding from Kingston Town Neighbourhood, Thames Community Foundation and Kingston Primary Care Trust.

If you came to the event and enjoyed yourself perhaps you may like to help out for an hour or two at next years event? You will probably end up tired and footsore like the rest of us but we can promise you that the memory of all those people enjoying themselves lasts a lot longer than the sore feet do.

Residents gathered on the green outside Queen Mary’s Hall at Cambridge Gardens and sat on their balconies on the mercifully rain free evening of the 16th August, to enjoy the 'swing' and ‘Big Band' style music of Kingston Youth Big Band. This event was organised by the Cambridge Road Estates Community Group in partnership with the Cambridge Gardens Residents Association and Kingston Resident Participation Team to celebrate Cambridge Gardens 60th Anniversary .Invited guests included The Mayor Councillor David Berry, Head of Housing, Mike England, Councillors Penny Shelton and Sheila Griffin and popular ex Councillor Ed Naylor. They were joined by the Norbiton Safer Neighbourhood Team and 'Silly Milly' the Clown who kept local youngsters enthralled whilst their grateful parents enjoyed that rare commodity, a few hours to relax knowing that the kids were happy and safely occupied. This has been one of the first big occasions when the Community Group has joined forces with the Cambridge Gardens Residents Association to put on an event and we are keen to ensure that it will not be the last!

April saw Piper Hall once again the focus of a CREST organised event. The Spring Fun Event saw almost 50 CRE parents and children enjoy a rare spell of sunshine whilst also participating in a variety of activities.

These included an estate quiz, won by Joshua Parry of Willingham Way, a competition to design the 2008 Fun Day poster won by brothers Rivan and Dilan Kader plus a hugely successful 'Pot a Plant' session , during which youngsters were helped and encouraged to create their own pot plant creations using equipment that was largely donated by Homebase. The few remaining seedlings were planted by volunteers including local Cllrs Sheila Griffin and Penny Shelton in the containers located outside Tadlow – given the amount of rain we have had residents can expect a spectacular showing this summer! Other popular activities included face painting, cookie decorating and an 'arts and crafts; table. Indeed, the event was so popular that many of our young residents had starring roles in all of the local newspapers! The committee was delighted to note that we were able to welcome families living on Cambridge Gardens – it has always been our aim to cater for both sides of the road!

The 25th January saw almost 80 residents converge on Piper Hall on the Cambridge Road Estates for a Food Feast. This was an event co-organised by CAP, CREST and Refugee Action and saw a wonderful display of foods donated representing foods from countries such as Somalia, India, Italy, Greece, Ireland, England, Pakistan, Arabia, Morocco, Afganistan and many other countries.

For just £1 per person, young an old were able to help themselves to a kalaiedescope of cuisines backed up by enough salads, breads and desserts to satisfy even the hungriest of partcipants. In addition to sampling foods, those present were lucky enough to witness a variety of cultural entertainment – Indian dancing, singing and other such delights were enjoyed by all.

An added bonus was the inter-cultural friendships made over lunch. People young and old swapped tales and gossiped in the time honoured fashion.
