World AIDS Day

Red RibbonWORLD AIDS DAY takes place on 1st December each year to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV and to raise awareness of HIV on a national and global scale. Wearing a red ribbon shows you are symbolising your support and breaking down the stigma which is attached to the HIV virus.

WORLD AIDS DAY 2010

Unlike previous years, Body Positive Lincs was not able to fully provide resources and organised displays to promote the profile of World AIDS Day in North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire due to adverse weather conditions. Many Schools, Colleges and agencies were closed due to the bad weather. However, posters, leaflets and ribbons were sent out to agencies but it was not possible to provide manned displays to raise awareness this year.

Conclusion

 WORLD AIDS DAY 2006

Last year on World AIDS Day Body Positive visited 3 schools in the Scunthorpe area and 2 schools and a college in the Grimsby area. Questionnaires were completed by staff and students to assess levels of awareness in HIV.

A total of 701 questionnaires were completed by staff and students to assess levels of awareness in HIV and AIDS

The information given on the questionnaires has been collated and the results have been fed back to the individual schools and the college.

Body Positive was also involved, in an advisory capacity, with the North Lindsey College Drama Group, in a drama project. This was the drama group's project for World AIDS Day. Two performances were given on the day and approximately 650 students attended. It is hoped the Play will be cascaded to other schools and colleges.

An evening event was held at Body Positive's Healthy Living Centre in Scunthorpe. A humanist service, in rememberance of those who have died from AIDS-related illness, was conducted by Mark Tyack and the following extract from the works of Herbert Read was read out:

“The death of each of you is in the order of things, it follows life as surely as night follows day, we can take a tree of life as a symbol, the human race is the trunk and branches of this tree and the individual man and woman are the leaves, which appear for one season, flourish for the summer and die, I too am like a leaf on a tree and one day I shall be torn off by a storm, or simply decay and fall and mingle with the earth and it’s roots. But whilst I live, I am conscious of the tree’s flowing sap and its steadfast strength, deep down in my consciousness is the consciousness of a collective life, a life of which I am part and to which I make a minute but unique contribution. When I die and fall the tree remains, nourished by my manifestation of life. Millions of leaves have preceded me and millions will follow; but the tree itself endures and grows.”

After a a candlelight vigil , a social evening followed with music provided by local acoustic duo "Dha Rud".

BP would like to thank :
Schools in North and North East Lincolnshire, respective PCT's and Local Authorities, Mark Tyack & Dha Rud and everybody else who very kindly volunteered their services and/or made donations on World AIDS Day.
