6. Education & Training

Certificate

When looking at Education and training there is a serious discrepancy between disabled people and non disabled people in relation to their experience of education and training.

Joseph Rowntree Foundation highlights this: At the age of 18/19, the highest qualification of 48 per cent of disabled young people was at the equivalent of NVQ level 1 or below (GCSE grades D-G or below), including those with no qualifications, compared with 28 per cent of non-disabled young people”

This is a common problem, one that is worse with some impairments, deaf children by the age of 7 are already excluded because of their lack of English skills, not surprising given that there are only 3 teachers in the whole of the Uk teaching ESOL to deaf people.

Whatever your disability, using public services in the UK can be difficult. Many colleges and universities are in old buildings that have not been adapted for disabled people and cause problems in terms of access and mobility. There may also be problems with transport, college facilities and even the nature of the course or training you wish to undertake.
