Refugee Action Kingston(RAK)

 

Refugee Action Kingston is a local and independent registered charity, providing advice and support for refugees and asylum seekers living, working or studying in the Royal Borough of Kingston and surrounding areas in South West London.

 

We provide free advice and information to asylum-seekers and refugees on the following subjects: Immigration (Level 1), welfare benefits, education, volunteering, training, employment, utilities, health. We can refer clients to solicitors and a wide range of specialist agencies. Our staff speak French and Arabic and we endeavor to find interpreters for other refugee community languages if necessary. To access information on services please attend one of our drop-in sessions.

 

DROP-IN ADVICE SESSIONS
Tuesdays – arrive for 9.30am
Fridays – arrive for 9.30am
These sessions are run at Siddeley House,50 Canbury Park Road,Kingston. (Drop-in, no appointment necessary)

 

People will either be seen on the day or given a scheduled appointment for later in the week.

LEARNING CENTRE
This is a weekly centre open to all refugees and asylum seekers. Services include informal English teaching for all levels, opportunity to learn how to use a computer, creche and activities for children aged 0-5 (plus activities for older children during school holidays), lunch and opportunity for socialising.We also run one-off courses, such as Citizenship.

 

Monday 10am – 1.15pm

 

Friday 10am-2.30pm

 

The sessions are run off-site on the Cambridge Estate. Please register for classes at the RAK office.

 

CLOTHING PROJECT
We collect and distribute good quality clothing, toys, kitchen items, baby items, pushchairs, curtains and bed linen. We hold large distribution days for our clients every 3 months, but can give out items at short notice in a crisis situation. Everything is given free of charge. Call our office for more details. SUMMER PLAYSCHEME
We run a Playscheme for 30 refugee children aged 5-10 and a project for refugee young people aged 11-16 in August. Registration begins in June with priority given to children most newly arrived in theUK.

 

VOLUNTEERING & EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT
We provide volunteer placements for refugees within R.A.K. Volunteers receive training and support. We give advice and support for refugees looking for employment, training or voluntary work. We also aim to raise awareness amongst employers of refugees' right to work in theUK.

 

PARTNERSHIP WORK - We currently receive funding from Royal Borough of Kingston, Kingston Primary Care Trust, Big Lottery, City Bridge Trust, BBC Children in Need, and other organisations. Additionally, we will be interested in entering shared funding bids with other voluntary agencies inKingston on a wide range of issues which may relate to the specialist services we provide to our clients.
